10 Things You Didnt Know About Betty White

At more than 90-years-old, Betty White is one of the most active and most well-loved stars in the entertainment industry.  When White’s career began in 1939, she was denied many roles because studios felt that she was “unphotogenic.”  However, three months after her high school graduation, White landed her first television role as a singer on an “experimental” Los Angeles channel. During the 40s and 50s, White’s career took off and she became one of the entertainment industry’s first female stars to host her own talk-show. White’s career reached new heights in 1985 when she starred as Rose Nylund in the popular sitcom, The Golden Girls. Although the show ended more than 20 years ago in 1992, fans have continued to watch the show over the years and several years ago White’s career was revived.  Her relatable sense of humor and warm demeanor have helped Betty White’s career last more than seven decades. However, even through she has spent the majority of her life in the spotlight, there are still things about Betty White that may [pleasantly] surprise her fans.  Here are 10 things you didn’t know about Betty White.

10. Betty White was the first female game show host to win and Emmy Award.

In 1983, Betty White hosted NBC’s short-lived game show,  Just Men!. The show featured two female contestants who had to accurately predict how a panel of celebrity men would answer questions.  Although the show only lasted a little over a year, it earned Betty White the Emmy Award for Outstanding Game Show Host, making her the first woman to ever receive such an award.

9. Betty White was originally offered the role of Blanch Devereaux on The Golden Girls.

Although Betty White is best known for her role as Rose Nylund on the hit sitcom, The Golden Girls, White was originally cast in the role of Blanche Devereaux.  The role was eventually given to the late Rue McClanahan who made Blanche one of the show’s most memorable characters.  While it may be hard to picture Betty White as the sexy seductress, she actually had experience playing a similar role when she played Sue Ann Nivens on the popular 70s sitcom, The Mary Tyler Moore show. The character of Sue Ann Nivens, who White described as “the neighborhood nymphomaniac” is credited with helping White display her wide range of acting skills.

The late Ernest Borgnine was an Academy Award winning actor who enjoyed a career that lasted for more than 60 years. In 2011, Borgnine and White received Lifetime achievement Awards from the Screen Actors Guild.  Although there is no record of him discussing the scent of White’s feet, this Twitter user seems to have the inside scoop.

7. Betty White tweets and has over 1 million followers on Twitter.

To date, Betty White has 1.14 million followers on Twitter.  Although she’s only published 59 tweets, she certainly knows hot to use the platform to tell a good joke.  Earlier this year Betty White tweeted: “People have been asking for tips- so here it is- my exercise secret – I have a two-story house and a very bad memory!” earning more than 2,000 retweets and 3,000 favorites proving that even at almost 100 years old, Betty White has still got it.

6. Betty White is the oldest person to ever host Saturday Night Live.

In 2010, Betty White, then 88-years-old, became the oldest person to ever host an episode of Saturday Night Live.  White described her experience on the show as the “scariest thing she’s ever done,” and initially she was reluctant to do the show at all.  However, White’s fans wouldn’t take no for an answer and created a FaceBook page titled “Betty White to Host SNL (please?)!” and quickly received more than 30,000 fans.

5. Betty White holds the Guiness World Record for ” Longest TV Career for a female entertainer.”

In 2013, Betty White, who was 91 at the time, became the Guiness World Record holder for the “Longest TV Career for an Entertainer (Female).” White’s career began in 1939, meaning that is has now spanned a 75 year period.  When White received news of her new record, she stated: “I was astounded when [Guinness World Records] called to tell me. Who? Me!?! It’s such as honor. The book has always been fascinating to me. I can’t believe I’m now associated with it.”

4. Betty White considers herself an animal activist before anything else.

According to sources, Betty White has been known to put animal activist on her resume before actress.  White has a long history of animal activism and for her 91st birthday wish, White asked the public to help her raise $10,000 for the Morris Animal Foundation. White has also donated thousands of dollars to the Los Angles Zoo, where she has been a member of the board since 1974. In fact, White loves animals so much that she turned down a role in the 1997 film, As Good as It Gets, because Jack Nickelson’s character threw his dog down a garbage chute.

3. Betty White is one of the most trust celebrities.

In 2011, a poll of 2,000 Americans dubbed Betty White American’s Most Trusted Celebrity.  44 percent of people polled also said that they would be more likely to purchase a product or do business with a company who featured Betty White in its ads.

2. Betty White has her own hot dog.

In an interview with People Magazine, White said that her eating habits were unhealthy and her favorite foods consisted of “hot dogs and Red Vines and potato chips and French fries.” However, it seems like hot dogs love Betty White just as much she loves them and in 2010 Pink’s Hot Dogs in Hollywood, California named “The Betty White Naked Dog” in White’s honor.

1. Betty White is a rapper.

In 2011, Betty White made her rapping debut on “I’m Still Hot” by Luciana.  The song features Betty White and Luciana having a rap and dancing battle as White drops bars about how old age hasn’t stopped her from behind hot.
